It’s not often that you come across someone who has been carving out new fields in their chosen art form for their entire life. But that is exactly what I have done and continue to do. My name is Tim Travis from Blue Dragon Artwork, and I am an artist with a passion for creating one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture sculptures and art. I don’t use computers or machines to help me with my creations – everything is done by hand, the old-fashioned way. This allows me to have a greater level of control over the finished product and also lets me put my unique take on each piece.
I was born into a family of artists and craftsmen and my passion for art and creation has been with me since I was a child. I have spent decades refining my skills. My approach to creating any piece of art is that I first picture the completed project in my head, and then set about building it. There are also times when I let the universe guide my hands and I am the vehicle for a piece that is wanting to come forth. This means that occasionally I don’t have a clear view of the direction the piece will take. When that happens, I am excited to see what is created. Time slips away, and I am carried to a place where I feel like I am tapping right into the fountain of creativity.
I am always looking to push the boundaries and create something 100% unique and totally my style. Most of my ideas are worlds apart from anything that has ever been done before. I may decide to do a curved bookcase, a dancing table, or Alice in Wonderland furniture. I have also done Dr Seuss and Disney themed pieces. I have seen people try and duplicate my creations and although it is frustrating, they do say that the best form of flattery is to copy… I can say though that my friends and I in the artistic field rarely focus on them. When creativity is rooted deep in your core DNA you are filled with so many ideas screaming to be created, that there isn’t time to let all of them come forth. I think that is what differentiates a true creative spirit from someone gifted at reproducing what has already been created. I want people to look at my furniture and sculptures and see that they are different, that they are unique. I want people to feel the passion, energy and the part of myself that I put into every one of my sculptures.
When someone tells me that they love my work, or that a piece I have created has moved them in some way, it is the best feeling in the world. It means that I have connected with that person on a level that goes beyond the physical. That is what art is supposed to do – it is supposed to touch us on a deep level and make us feel something, anything. Whether it is happiness, sadness, anger, love, awe, wonder or even just a sense of peace, art should make us feel something. And that is what I strive to do with my work.
If you have a passion for art and creation, then I encourage you to follow your dreams and see where they take you. You never know
